“How far does it go?” is the question we hear most. The honest answer depends on colour and, above all, on light. Here are the indicative distances for our class 2 lasers and the best model for long-range use outdoors.
Our most chosen green laser for birds, stars and long-range pointing.
Two different things get called range. The first is how far away you can still see the dot on a surface – a wall, a tree, a roof. The second is whether you can see the beam itself in the air. With class 2 lasers (up to 1 mW, the class intended for sale to the public in the UK), the dot is what matters. The beam is only faintly visible in very dark, humid air.
Three things decide how far you can see the dot: ambient light (sun versus dusk versus dark), the surface (a pale wall shows a dot better than dark foliage) and the air (haze, rain and fog scatter the light). That is why we give indicative figures for each condition rather than one big number.
| Conditions | Visible dot |
|---|---|
| Indoors | 30 m+ (a whole room or hall) |
| Daylight (dot on a shaded surface) | approx. 100 m |
| Dusk and dawn | approx. 300 m |
| Dark | approx. 1 km (dot); beam faintly visible in very dark, humid air |
Green is the only colour we recommend for real distances. It reaches approx. 300 m at dusk and approx. 1 km in the dark, which is why it is our choice for bird control and stargazing.
| Conditions | Visible dot |
|---|---|
| Indoors | 30 m |
| Daylight (dot on a shaded surface) | approx. 30–50 m |
| Dusk and dawn | approx. 100–150 m |
| Dark | approx. 300–500 m |
| Conditions | Visible dot |
|---|---|
| Indoors | 20 m |
| Daylight (dot on a shaded surface) | approx. 10 m |
| Dusk and dawn | approx. 50 m |
| Dark | approx. 200 m |
Red is fine for a garden, a yard or a hall. Violet is a colour for evenings and short range. If you need distance, choose green.
For practical ideas, read outdoor uses for a green laser pointer and how to scare birds with a laser pointer.
A dot that travels hundreds of metres can reach places you did not intend. Before you switch on, check what lies beyond your target: roads, houses, people, animals, vehicles, aircraft, water or glass. Never aim at any of them. Keep the laser away from children and use the safety key where fitted. Full rules on laser pointer safety.
