Laser Pointer for Cats and Dogs: Short, Safe Play Sessions

Lots of cats love chasing a laser dot. Done properly it is good exercise; done carelessly it frustrates the animal or risks its eyes. These are the rules we recommend, and the lasers we would use.

Why cats chase the dot

A moving dot triggers a cat’s hunting instinct: stalk, pounce, chase. For an indoor cat that does not get to hunt, a few minutes with a laser pointer for cats can be a real workout. The problem is that the dot can never be caught. Some cats – and quite a few dogs – get frustrated or start fixating on lights and reflections afterwards. That is why the way you play matters more than the laser you use.

Five rules for safe play

  1. Floor and walls only. Keep the dot on the floor or low on a wall. Never shine it at your pet’s face or eyes, or anyone else’s.
  2. Short sessions. Five to ten minutes is plenty. Stop before your cat is exhausted or over-excited.
  3. End with a real catch. Finish by leading the dot onto a toy mouse or a treat, then switch off, so your cat ends with something it can actually catch.
  4. Watch for obsession. If your pet starts staring at reflections or chasing shadows, stop using the laser and switch to toys it can catch.
  5. Adults only. A laser is not a toy; do not let children use it to play with the cat.

Dogs are more prone than cats to becoming fixated on lights, so with dogs be extra cautious – short sessions, and a ball or tug toy instead whenever possible.

Which laser to use

For play indoors you do not need range – you need a laser that is safe, simple and comfortable in the hand. All our lasers are class 2, up to 1 mW, the class intended for sale to the public in the UK.

  • M1 red laser pen – a calm red dot that is clearly visible on carpets and floors. Our first pick indoors.
  • X1 green laser pen – brighter, useful on dark floors or in a bigger room.
  • R2 Pro – compact and rechargeable if you play every day.

Not sure your pet will enjoy it? The three-colour pen set lets you try different colours – though for play, red and green are the practical choices.

A simple play routine

Many owners find a short, predictable routine works best. Pick a time when your cat is naturally active, often early evening. Start the dot slowly near your cat on the floor and let it stalk; move it away in short runs, with pauses, the way prey would behave. After a few minutes, steer the dot onto a toy mouse, let your cat pounce on the toy, switch off and offer a treat. That way the game has a clear end and a real reward.

Around the house

Mirrors, glass doors, shiny tiles and the TV screen can bounce a laser dot – and the beam – into eyes. Choose a room with matt floors and walls for play. Keep the laser on a high shelf afterwards so the children cannot get at it.

Read our full laser pointer safety rules. And if you also have pigeons on the roof, the same green pen works outdoors too – see laser pointer for scaring birds.

Frequently asked questions

Is a laser pointer safe for cats?
A class 2 laser used on the floor, never at the eyes, in short sessions and ending with a real toy is the safe way to play.
What is laser pointer syndrome?
It is the informal name for pets that become fixated on lights and reflections after laser play. Short sessions that end with a real catch help prevent it.
Which colour is best for cats?
Red or green both work. Red is calm on most floors; green is brighter on dark surfaces.
